On-Site Laboratory Services
Hematology
The complete blood count (CBC) is the most commonly performed basic hematology
technique. This procedure provides the veterinarian with a red cell mass,
white cell number, platelet estimate, total protein, and blood smear evaluation.
Chemistries
A serum chemistry is a test performed to find levels of chemicals produced
in the body. The levels aid the veterinarian in diagnosing and treating
the horses.
Cytology
Cytology involves the microscopic examination and evaluation of individual
cells. Cytologies aid the veterinarian in diagnosing and treating problems.
Transtracheal washes, uterine cytologies, abdominal and joint taps, are
a few examples of the various cytologies we evaluate.
Serology
Serological testing is an important tool for the diagnosis of infectious
diseases. In veterinary medicine, serology tests are often required by
regulatory agencies to prove an animal isn’t infected for a carrier
of a particular infectious disease.
Blood gas
A blood gas measures levels of gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide and
the blood’s Ph level. The blood gas is utilized on animals in surgery
and animals that are being monitored closely by the veterinarians.
Parasitology
Parasites are responsible for significant disease in horses. Internal
and external parasites can be present on or in all animals and in every
organ or tissue. Fecal floats or skin scrapings are used to identify the
offending parasites and aids the veterinarian in treating the animal.
Microbiology
The purpose of the clinical microbiology laboratory is to rapidly and
accurately provide the veterinarian with information concerning the presence
or absence of a bacteria that is specifically or potentially involved
in an infectious disease process in a patient.
EIA testing (Coggins)
EIA testing is State regulated. We offer AGAR-gel, which is a 24-hour
test or ELISA, which is set up and reported out the same day it is submitted.
The State prefers AGAR-gel testing. ELISAs are only used in an emergency
situation.
